Serenia Life Financial Raises $1,686 for The Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada
Serenia Life Financial’s collective charitable impact over the past four years is over $3.6 million¹
WATERLOO, ON | June 3, 2024 — Serenia Life Financial, a member-based organization providing life insurance and investment solutions across Canada, is honoured to have provided a $1,686 donation to The Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada, in support of children’s bereavement charities, on behalf of their Head Office Action team.
This year, Serenia Life selected The Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada as the recipient of their yearly Spring Head Office Action Team — an office-wide fundraising initiative that encourages employees to participate in team-building activities to raise money for an important cause. The Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada is a non-profit organization that raises and distributes much-needed funds to Canadian registered charities supporting children’s bereavement.
“As a life insurer, we think it’s important to raise much-needed funds for Canada’s youngest grievers,” said Glenn Hymers, President & CEO of Serenia Life Financial. “Supporting The Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada is also a way to recognize the effects that grief can have on a person’s mental health during Mental Health Awareness Month.”
In Canada, approximately one in 14 children will experience the death of a family member by the age of 18 (source). Children can be overlooked in the grieving process and are sometimes referred to as “the forgotten mourners.” Canada’s current healthcare system lacks adequate resources and access to preventative interventions that could mitigate risks and enhance the well-being of children and youth coping with the loss of a loved one. Since 2020, The Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada has funded 17 programs across Canada, providing support to over 2,755 grieving children and families.
“Our organization is incredibly grateful to Serenia Life, and to all our supporters, who recognize and share our commitment to helping remove financial and informational barriers to accessing bereavement support for young Canadians who are suffering,” said Dr. Marissa Slaven, Chair of Children’s Grief Foundation of Canada. “The impact made by these donations cannot accurately be measured in dollars but rather in lives touched.”
The fundraiser was made possible by Serenia Life’s Action Team benefit, which encourages members to organize a fundraiser by providing $150 in seed money to help kickstart the fundraising event, as well as a post-event donation of $100 to the cause they are supporting. Serenia Life’s Spring Action team took place throughout the month of May. Fundraising efforts included selling potted plants for Mother’s Day and hosting ‘Office Olympics,’ where Serenia Life employees paid to participate in a number of competitions.

The Action Team is just one of many member benefits² offered by Serenia Life. Serenia Life’s Member Benefits program also awards post-secondary scholarships to members, and provides access to caregiving courses, bereavement benefits, a baby bonus for purchasing life insurance for a newborn, first aid training, a free legal will, help covering the cost of volunteering away from home, and more.
“At Serenia Life, we encourage both our staff and our members to live generously by giving back to the community through our Member Benefits and various charitable initiatives,” said Glenn. “Our core values are rooted in kindness, empathy, collaboration, and generosity. And it is important for our organization to epitomize those values.”
Serenia Life also participates in an annual hockey tournament to raise money for local homeless support agencies, and runs a Payroll Deduction Program, whereby employees can donate a portion of their paycheque to charities in need and Serenia Life matches that donation at the end of each year.
Between 2018 and 2023, Serenia Life’s charitable impact was $3,659,320. Its total charitable impact between 1972 and 2022 is $56.5 million.
